SEED TREATMENTS

Prairie seeds stored dry, at cold temperatures, have received dry cold stratification. All seeds that you purchase from Oak Prairie Farm have received dry cold stratification. For many prairie seeds that is all it takes to be ready to plant.

Some prairie seeds need moist cold stratification. Just mix the Oak Prairie Farm seed with about three times the volume of sterile sand or vermiculite, moisten the mix, and store in a sealed plastic bag in your refrigerator. Then the seed is ready to plant. It is helpful to label each bag with the flower name and the date you put it in your refrigerator. Seed that you purchase from Oak Prairie Farm has not received cold moist stratification.

Some prairie seeds need scarification, (scratching the seed coat to allow water to enter). All seeds that you purchase from Oak Prairie Farm that need it, have already received the necessary scarification.

Prairie legume seeds will need inoculation with the right bacteria in order to be able to fix nitrogen in their root nodules. All seeds that you purchase from Oak Prairie Farm that need it, will have the right inoculum along with the seed. Just moisten the seed and add the inoculum, then the seed is ready to plant.
