Description: Dense showy cluster of brilliant royal blue flowers grow on a branched tall slender stem with a green or purplish tint. The sap is thick. The flowers unfold every morning. They are short lived.
These perennial,
plants are up to 3 feet tall, with long slender grass like leaves.
Suggested seed treatment: You should provide 120 days of cold moist stratification. Many prairie wildflower seeds benefit by moist cold stratification, some require it to germinate. Seed that you purchase from Oak Prairie Farm has not received cold moist stratification. Direct planting tips: Plant seed in desired location covered by 1/4 inch of soil, and firm. Transplants: If you grow transplants from our seed: transplant while dormant in spring or fall, trim long roots, plant with buds just below the soil surface, space 1 to 2 feet apart. Companion prairie plants: Butterfly milkweed, Round headed bush clover, Yellow coneflower, Big bluestem, June grass. Comments: Thought by some to be an indicator of radiation or nuclear activity in areas around nuclear power plants. The plants have been reported to change flower color during a leak. It is also thought to cure spider bites. |
