Description:   small purple flowers growing on a tall flower stalk at the top of the plant. These perennial, plants are up to 4 feet tall, with many long smooth edged leaves.
Attracts:Butterflies and Honeybees.
Bloom time: From August to October.
Range:Common throughout the tall grass prairie.
Sunshine:Full sun
Moisture: Middle to dry.
Soil types: Sandy loam best.

Suggested seed treatment:   You should provide 30 days of cold dry stratification. All seed that you purchase from Oak Prairie Farm has received dry cold stratification.

Direct planting tips:   Plant seed in desired location cover with 1/4 inch deep soil, and firm.

Transplants:   If you grow transplants from our seed: transplant 2 year old corms while dormant in spring or fall, trim long roots, plant with buds about 2 inches below the soil surface, space 1 to 2 feet apart.

Companion prairie plants:    Round headed bush clover, Purple prairie clover, Yellow coneflower, Big bluestem, Indian grass.

Comments:   Native Americans used a tea made from the leaves to treat stomachaches and snakebites.
