Botanical name:	Silphium perfoliatum

Description: numerous bright yellow flowers grow on a single stalk at the top of the plant. These perennial, plants are up to 8 feet tall, the leaf pairs form cups around a square stem.

Attracts:	Birds, Butterflies, Hummingbirds, and Honeybees.
Bloom time:	From July through September.
Range:	Canada and south.
Sunshine:	Full sun to partial shade.
Moisture:	Wet to middle.
Soil types:	Clay or loam best.

Suggested seed treatment: You should provide 10 days of cold moist stratification. Many prairie wildflower seeds benefit by moist cold stratification, some require it to germinate. Seed that you purchase from Oak Prairie Farm has not received cold moist stratification.

Direct planting tips: Plant seed in desired location 1/2 inch deep in soil, and firm.

Transplants: If you grow transplants from our seed: transplant while dormant in spring or fall, trim long roots, plant with buds just below the soil surface, space 2 to 3 feet apart. Can transplant up to two year old plants. Very vigorous.

Companion prairie plants: Wild iris, Joe-Pye weed, Culver's root, Big bluestem, Indian grass.

Comments: Very vigorous. Seed head is a good source of seed for birds during the winter.
